Thousands of flood victims in three districts of Banyumas regency, Central Java, are in dire need of clean water as water in their wells has been contaminated and is thus unfit for human consumption.
“We are forced to use rainwater to wash ourselves and cook,” said Kodirun from Nusadadi, the head village of Sumpiuh district, on Thursday.
Kodirun said 56 homes and 280 hectares of rice fields were still flooded.
“Because of using rainwater, residents are complaining of itchiness,” he said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
Head of the regental health agency Widayanto said his office had deployed two water purifiers to turn the contaminated water into water safe for consumption.
“We have also ordered public health centers in Sumpiuh, Tambak and Kemrajen districts, to stay open for 24 hours,” Widayanto said.
He added that he would guarantee free medical treatment for those who were infected by diseases because of the flood. (ewd)
